giant oil plumes in the gulf and when does the conversation about the situation down there become realistic?

Now there are giant plumes of oil in the Gulf (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/16/us/16oil.html?hp).  Is it really surprising at this point?  Should we consider it possible that all life in the Gulf of Mexico suffers drastically, dramatically, and very significantly?
