maternity leave? what's that?
Now a week and a half into parenthood, I am able to steal away to school here and there for meetings and some dissertation time. My wife on the other hand, still recooperating from a natural childbirth and all that came with it, is resting and with Tilda. Guilt is a natural emotion that tags along with me as I sit down to do work. Our university is not Ivy League or part of the UC system or a big-deal liberal arts college, its a state university, division I athletics, and a work horse sort of research institute. What that means for us is there is not a maternity leave. My wife has a friend at a liberal arts college, also just had a baby, and she is on maternity leave. This is probably the biggest issue facing grad students who would like to increase the size of their family. The university, and the system as it were, more than likely, would prefer to not support that sort of decision. Not to say our department and particularly our advisors have not demonstrated support for us. We chose this though and we stick by it and I do believe it will work, that we will both continue with our research and complete our PhDs. To the Tilda though now...she has lungs that work fantastically and when she's in the mood she can make all of my nerves stand to attention, perhaps not too surprisingly. Her mother is successfully breast-feeding her, though we do occassionally supplement with a formula as the milk production catches up with Tilda's appetite. Sleep is slighlty easier to come by, we each get a few hours each night and my wife has taken to napping with Tilda at times during the day. I would be wise to follow this example if I was not compelled to bust out my laptop everytime Tilda takes to sleeping. We are still in the first couple of weeks and while things are settling down, we are still on the steep side of the learning curve. But, as we were advised, we do a little (work) each day and the next day do a little more, and that's how we are getting back to research. What graduate student doesn't do work at 10pm on a weeknight anyway?
